When the single dad of two girls gets up to make breakfast, it’s already done…

Jack had no idea that a normal morning would turn into a puzzle that would alter his life for good. Being the only dad to two girls, his daily life was always tiring, but that day, there was a surprise in the kitchen for him.
Jane, 4, and Lily, 5, had only one father, Jack. After leaving to travel the world with her husband, he took over all of the housework and parenting duties. Despite how much he loved them no matter what, he was always tired.

Like every morning, Jack got up early, called the girls, and helped them get ready. Lily wore a flowery dress, and Emma wore her favorite pink shirt. They went downstairs for breakfast after getting ready.

He stopped, though, when Jack walked into the kitchen. Three plates of pancakes, each with jam and fresh fruit on top, were set out on the table.

— “Did you see this, girls?” Jack asked with interest.

“Dad, did you make pancakes?” Lily asked with joy.

Jack hadn’t made them, though. Every door and window was shut when he checked them. When he called his sister Sarah, she said she wasn’t there. Even though it was a surprise, he ate the pancakes. They were really tasty.

Jack took the girls to daycare after breakfast and then went to work. He still thought about the puzzle, though.

Jack found another treat when he got home that night: the lawn was perfectly cut. It had been weeks since he had time to mow it.

— “This is getting strange…” Jack made a noise.

He finally decided that night that he could not ignore what was going on. He woke up early the next morning and hid in the kitchen, watching through a small hole in the door.

A woman came in through the window around 6 AM. She started to clean up the kitchen while wearing a worn-out mail carrier outfit. She took pancake mix out of a bag and started to make them.

Jack came out from behind something.

— “Please wait!” “I’m not going to hurt you.”

The woman stopped moving in shock.

— “Was the pancakes your job?” Why? “Who are you?”

As she thought about it, Jack said in a calm voice, “Please sit down.” My name is Jack, and I’m the girls’ dad. “I just want to know why you’re here.”

“My name is Claire,” the woman finally said.

Claire said that Jack had helped her a few months before. She was stuck on the side of the road, and he took her to a free hospital. Jack felt moved when he thought about that moment.

— “You helped me when no one else did.” The government helped me get my life back on track after that, and I got a job. To thank you, I chose the only way I knew how to help you: by giving you my time.

Jack had a lump in his throat.

— “But Claire, it’s not safe for you to come into my house like this.” You could have just talked to me straight up.

Claire bowed her head in shame.

— “I’m really sorry.” I hope I didn’t scare you. I only wanted to assist.

Emma and Lily had come down because they thought they heard voices. They were looking at Claire with interest. — “Thank you for the pancakes!” Lily smiled and said, “They were great.”

Jack smiled and took a deep breath.

— “Claire, let’s do it right this time.” You are welcome to join us for breakfast whenever you can. Please don’t tell anyone else anything.

Claire had tears in her eyes.

“That sounds great to me. Thanks, Jack.

They all ate breakfast together that morning. They laughed as Claire told them stories from her life. Jack knew that acts of kindness can come back to you in strange ways.

Over the next few days, Claire started coming over more often. These girls helped her get back in touch with her lost son, and she helped Jack with the girls.

It was a strange mystery that turned into a real friendship. This shows that small acts of kindness can make connections that last a lifetime.

Giving someone help can lead to the start of a new family.
