We stood in hesitation, not knowing what to do. The soldier lay motionless, his breathing barely visible. The shepherd kept circling around his master, sometimes growling, sometimes sharply glancing at the approaching passersby.

It seemed like one more step, and he would lunge to protect him. People began to stop, a crowd gathered, but no one dared to come closer. Then an elderly woman, who clearly understood dogs, said in a firm voice:
