The Mistake I Almost Didn’t Catch In Time

During the time when the nurse was wheeling her back from surgery, she gave me a feeble thumbs up while her favorite Pikachu was cuddled right next to her. I congratulated her on how well things had gone and kissed her on the forehead.

Later on, while she was sleeping, I went into the corridor to ask a simple question; nevertheless, the surgeon’s countenance became more tense. He took a quick look at the chart before uttering in a low voice, “This isn’t… wait—what room is she in with again?”

The pit of my stomach sank. “Room 312…” She goes by the name of Harper Langston.

The chart was brought in closer to him as he grimaced. It is not. Please address this to Hailey Langdon. One would expect her to be in room 314.

I became numb. From the interior of her room, I was able to hear the beeping of many machines. Our daughter has just emerged from the operating room. To what extent had they harmed her? As I inquired, “What did you do during the surgery?” my voice was shaking very little.

He was hesitant. When the gallbladder was removed, it was a routine laparoscopic procedure.

Stunned, I blinked my eyes. A port was meant to be inserted in her body so that she could receive chemotherapy. Seven is her age. Her condition is leukemia.

The surgeon’s face became a pallid color. Say, “Wait here.”

Neither did I wait. Despite the calls coming from behind me, I stomped down the corridor in a furious manner. My infant was laying in that bed, covered in bandages as a result of an operation that she was not intended to have. When I opened the door, I did so carefully so as not to wake her up. When she was lying in the hospital bed, her little hand was wrapped around the soft toy. She appeared to be quite small. I took a seat next to her and held her hand, my fingers trembling under the pressure.

It was only a few minutes later when an entire team arrived. The surgeon, two nurses, a person from the administration of the hospital, and a woman who identified herself as a patient safety officer while carrying a clipboard were all present. Despite the fact that they spoke in a controlled and calm manner, I could sense the excitement in their eyes. They had committed a grave error of judgment.

The administrator made the following statement: “We are extremely sorry, Ms. Langston.” “We are doing an investigation into what caused this to occur. It appears that there was a misunderstanding in the pre-operative area, and as a result, your daughter was admitted under the incorrect file.

My thoughts were all over the place. I had taken the time to sign the consent documents for her operation. What could possibly go wrong with that?

“Everything is being looked at by us. On the other hand, we want you to know that this operation will not potentially put her in danger in the long run. It is simply not what she required at this moment.

Is it not what she required? I could have yelled out. “She has been diagnosed with cancer. You removed an organ from her body that she did not require removal.

A gentle groan could be heard coming from Harper as she moved in bed. Once more, my heart was broken. While I was leaning in close, I whispered that I was present and that everything was fine. She gave a minuscule nod and then went back to sleep.

I had the impression that I was standing in a fog for the next hour. I couldn’t even come close to explaining what had occurred when I called my mother, who was watching my younger son at the time. Then I sat down in that chair made of plastic, holding Harper’s hand and attempting to keep from crying. I had put my faith in them. I had complied with each and every instruction. However, they continued to make a mistake.

The medical facility made a commitment to complete openness and offered to pay for the expenses associated with the erroneous surgical procedure. However, that was not sufficient. I was in search of answers. And perhaps most crucially, I needed to safeguard Harper from making any other errors.

The subsequent few days were a frenzy indeed. Because of the unplanned removal of her gallbladder, the actual insertion of her port was delayed while she recovered from the procedure. I never left her side and never left her side. At every moment that a nurse or doctor entered the room, I made sure that everything was in order. Please provide her name, birthdate, and chart. As a matter of fact, I scribbled it twice on her arm using a marker.

In the afternoon, while she was once again sleeping, a young nurse by the name of Gemma came in and asked me in a gentle manner if I required anything. Despite the fact that I was exhausted and irritable, I declined the offer. After a brief pause, she finally spoke up and said, “I am aware that you are upset. The same goes for me. With that being said, what about the young lady who was set to have her gallbladder removed? What about Hailey Langdon? Immediately prior to being transported into the operating room, she experienced a serious allergic reaction. There was a delay in her case. It is possible that they would not have been able to catch it in time if Harper had not gone in instead.

I sat up straight. “What is it?”

“Yeah,” she acknowledged with a nod. It was discovered that she had an uncommon allergy to latex that had never been documented before. During the anesthetic, she may have experienced a state of shock. It had the potential to be fatal.”

I was fixated on her. An unexplainable chill raced through my body. “So… you’re saying that mistake was the one that saved the life of that girl?”

Her voice was gentle as she said, “I’m not saying that it was right.” “However… perhaps it wasn’t all that bad.”

I had no idea how to deal with the information. The only thing I did was nod and thank her.

After some time had passed, I decided to search up Hailey’s parents. It was in the corridor that I had seen them a couple of times. Karen, her mother, appeared to be fatigued despite having a friendly face. I talked to her the following morning in the family area, and she appeared shocked when I approached her.

My name is Harper, and I am her mother. I… I believe that our daughters got it all muddled up.

Her eyes grew more wide. “Oh, my my God. Could it have been your daughter?

We sat down and had a conversation. She related to me how they had discovered that Hailey had an allergy after she had broken out in hives right before she was brought in by wheelchair. They conducted testing. He was allergic to latex, glue, and even a drug that was administered intravenously.

Despite the tears that were in her eyes, Karen stated, “If she had gone into surgery… it could have killed her.”

We were silent for a little period of time. Even though we were comforting each other, it was strange because we knew that both of our girls had been ensnared in this terrible web. On the other hand, it’s possible that their suffering has prevented each other from experiencing even more suffering.

I saw Karen more and more during the course of the following week. During our time together in the lounge, we shared snacks and stories with one another. It was even possible for Harper and Hailey to meet and color pictures together at one point. They shared a passion for Pokémon.

After some time, Harper’s port was positioned, and this time it was done correctly. After that, her treatments began. It was a difficult experience. On certain days, she did not feel like eating, her hair began to fall out in clumps, and she threw up three times before noon. She also had days when she did not want to eat. However, she never left Pikachu’s side, and she always wore a smile whenever the therapy dog came to visit.

Harper inquired about the possibility of presenting Hailey with one of her stuffed animals throughout the afternoon. “I have more than she does,” she stated in a straightforward manner. “And I believe that she is at times depressed.”

As I saw her hand over her fluffy, yellow rabbit, I couldn’t help but hold back my tears. Hailey gave her a bear hug deeply.

It had been two months. Then there are three. The chemo treatment was successful for Harper. We had to move in with my mother for a while in order to be in close proximity to the hospital, but we were able to make it work. Using my laptop, I was able to take up some freelance work. The life that I led was not typical, but it was full of minor pleasures. Mornings with pancakes. The pajamas are a match. I couldn’t help but laugh at Harper’s hairless head after she had applied stickers to it.

I received a phone call from the legal department of the hospital one day. They desired to put down roots. The error had been recorded, apologies had been extended, and the staff had been retrained. However, they were aware that I could file a lawsuit and very likely prevail. They presented Harper with a financial package that would cover all of her medical expenses for the next five years, in addition to providing recompense for her pain and suffering suffered.

I didn’t immediately dive in. For a very long time, I pondered. A lawyer was what I spoke with. And in the end, I consented—but only under one condition.

Color-coded patient identification bands for pediatric surgery would be funded with a portion of the settlement money, which would be used to pay a new policy. The request that I made was for it to be named after both Harper and Hailey. The hospital was in agreement.

Now, every child who goes through surgery at that facility receives a bold and bright wristband that indicates a double-check system. Before the child is allowed to be returned, the nurse, the parent, and the digital match all need to certify that they are in agreement with each other. There will be no more confusion. No more blunders made in silence.

One of the local newspapers even published an article about it, which was titled “From Error to Innovation: How Two Girls Changed Hospital Safety.” Among the photographs was one that showed Harper and Hailey smiling and holding hands when both of them were missing their front teeth.

One year later, Harper rang the bell for her chemotherapy treatment. A remission had occurred in her malignancy. Cupcakes, glitter, and balloons with the words “YOU DID IT!” were all part of the celebration that we threw. She, too, was Hailey. They laughed until they slumped in the grass while playing tag in the backyard until they were exhausted.

When I think of being in the hospital corridor on that particular day, it still stings to remember it. That moment when the surgeon’s face showed a change, when it was cold and quiet. On the other hand, I am aware now that… Not every misstep will result in a disastrous outcome. At other times, it can lead to something more desirable.

It was almost a mistake that damaged my daughter. But in a peculiar and convoluted manner, it was able to save another infant. And as a result, a mechanism that will safeguard all children was developed.

If this is the true lesson, then perhaps it is this: speak up. You should inquire. Watch out for this. Due to the fact that a single voice, a single mother who refuses to remain silent, has the power to alter more than just the narrative of her own kid.

To those who have made it this far, I am grateful. Additionally, if you found this tale to be moving, I would ask that you share it with someone who is in need of being reminded that even mistakes can have hidden blessings. One never knows who they might be able to assist.
